16th Annual Wynn Sorkin Memorial Tennis Tournament was held Monday, June 21, 2010
Dave Ference and Steve Steinhardt won the 16th Annual Wynn Sorkin Memorial Tennis Tournament. The finalists were Howard Koff and Terry Way. There were 16 participants, including Steve, who plays when there are an odd number of entries.
The Tournament was held on Monday, June 21, 2010 on a warm, sunny day. A round robin, handicap (high-low pairings) doubles tournament for men/women 60 and older who are annual pass holders, the tournament honors Wynn Sorkin, a long term member and former vice president of the Albany Tennis Club. Wynn was also a well known Masters athlete in track and field, competing at the Empire State Games in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. He had always wanted to create a low-key, fun-filled tournament that was geared to senior players, and would not have a "one loss and out" format.
Steve, Wynn's son-in-law, runs the tournament. Mackenzie and Ed provided valuable help to Steve in selecting the pairings, a role performed for many years by Frank Collins, who is no longer living in the Capital Region. Mac also ably handled score-keeping and court match-ups, as well as running down errant tennis balls and exhibiting her cheerful personality to all the participants.
The matches were very competitive. Dave and Steve won two of their three bracket matches 5-4 by prevailing in 9 point tiebreakers in each match. Howard and Terry won two of their three bracket matches 5-3. All bracket matches were played using no-ad scoring. Five games won each bracket set. Cumulative games won in all bracket matches determined the two teams that played in the finals. The score in the finals, played under regular tennis scoring rules, was 6-4.
The winners and finalists received pens in engraved holders, bearing the name of the tournament, as prizes.
